Two More Goals for Augustin in 5-2 Men's Soccer Win

Spencer Augustin tallied a pair of goals Saturday afternoon to lead the Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team to a 5-2 Northwest Conference triumph over the visiting George Fox Bruins on the PLU field.

Augustin has scored four goals in the last three matches and has taken over the team lead with eight tallies this season. His goals, which provided bookends for the seven-goal match, helped the Lutes improve their overall record to 7-2 and their conference mark to 4-1. George Fox is now 2-6-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference.

PLU, which remains in a tie with Whitworth and Puget Sound atop the NWC standings, hosts defending conference champion Pacific at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

After the Lutes had an early goal by Surafel Wodajo called back because of a foul, Augustin opened the scoring at the 16:42 mark, knocking home a cross from Wodajo. The next goal also came at 37:09 on another assist from Wodajo, whose corner kick was headed into the goal by Greg Noll.

The assists were the eighth and ninth of the season in just nine matches for the senior midfielder who hails from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by way of Lindbergh High School in Renton. With 30 career assists, he is now tied with Jay Pettit (2002-05) for the career lead in that category.

Richard Renteria netted his first collegiate goal at 43:20 with the assist going to Derek Johnson.

Early in the second half, the Lutes made it 4-0 on Brenden Cohen's first goal of the season, with Augustin getting the assist this time.

George Fox drew two goals back, the first an unassisted tally by Myles Sorokovsky, and the second from Sawyer Meek with assists going to Brennan Altringer and Luke Dickens. Meek knocked in a rebound from a corner kick.

Augustin closed the scoring at 82:55, following up his own shot.

George Fox had a 23-17 advantage in shots, and it put 13 of those on frame to force 11 saves from PLU keeper Joe Rayburn. The Lutes had eight shots on goal, finishing five of them, and that left three saves for Fox keeper Elliott Davis.
