Whitman's Last-Second Goal Stuns Lutes 1-0

Box Score

WALLA WALLA – Whitman took the quest for a last-second win literally, as Junpei Tsuji scored the game-winner for the Missionaires in the final second of the second overtime period to shock 20th-ranked Pacific Lutheran 1-0 Saturday afternoon.

Pacific Lutheran's second consecutive loss drops the Lutes' record to 9-2-3 overall and 4-2-2 in Northwest Conference play. Whitman improves to 5-7-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the NWC. The Lutes will look to bounce back Sunday afternoon against defending conference champion Whitworth.

Whitman's relentless offensive attack peppered PLU goalkeeper Joe Rayburn with shots throughout the match, as the hosts outshot the Lutes 27-to-7 in the match, including 22-to-3 following the halftime break. Rayburn made numerous clutch saves for the Lutes, compiling 10 total in the game, before Tsuji took the pass from Reid Shaw and knocked it past the PLU senior for the Golden Goal victory only one second before the match was set to end in a scoreless tie.

The Lutes finished with 27 fouls in the match to 17 for Whitman in a contentious match that featured four yellow cards. Whitman's victory clinches a season split for the two teams, as a pair of Derek Johnson goals in the second half led PLU to a 3-1 win over the Missionaries two weeks ago in Parkland.
