Late goal carries Lutes to 1-0 win over George Fox

Box Score

PARKLAND – A contentious men's soccer contest between George Fox and Pacific Lutheran looked destined for overtime until Joe Olenginski broke through with his first career goal to lead the Lutes to a 1-0 Northwest Conference win Sunday afternoon at East Field.

Pacific Lutheran improved to 12-4-3 overall and 7-4-2 in conference play, while George Fox fell to 1-18 overall and 0-13 in the NWC. The Lutes climbed back into third place in the conference standings with one match remaining on the schedule, Saturday's Senior Day rivalry match against Puget Sound at 1:30 p.m.

"We're looking to end the season strong as we have our last game next week against UPS here at home," PLU head coach John Yorke said.

Sunday's match featured a combined 40 fouls – 28 in the second half – as PLU tallied 25 and George Fox finished with 15. Seven yellow cards and eight offsides calls also disrupted play throughout the contest. The Lutes out-shot the Bruins 18-to-5 overall and 10-to-1 in the second half, but GFU goalkeeper Ricardo Sotelo tallied seven saves to keep the match scoreless until the final 10 minutes of play.

Fittingly for the match, the goal setup came following a foul call in the 82nd minute. A free kick by Diego Aceves on the left side found Olenginski in the box for a short kick to the right of Sotelo to put PLU on the board with the eventual game-winner.

Joe Rayburn made two saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal for the Lutes. Derek Johnson finished with a match-high eight shots, including four on-goal, in the win. The Lutes will honor the seniors on the 2013 team prior to Saturday's match against UPS.
