Lutes Pick Up 3-0 Victory Over Wisconsin Lutheran in 2013 Home Opener

PARKLAND – The Pacific Lutheran offense kept attacking and the Lute defense limited Wisconsin Lutheran to five total shots as PLU knocked off the Warriors 3-0 in nonconference men's soccer action Friday night.

Pacific Lutheran improves to 3-0 on the year with the win in its home opener, while Wisconsin Lutheran falls to 1-1-2. The Lutes will look to open the season with four straight wins for the first time since 1998 Sunday afternoon, when they host Evergreen in a 2:30 p.m. matchup.

"Good win tonight against Wisconsin Lutheran tonight," PLU head coach John Yorke said. "I thought we had a slow first half; even though we scored two goals, I was a little bit concerned about the tempo and maybe a little bit of our passes and how we connected."

Yorke's comments may seem like nitpicking to the spectators who saw PLU outshoot WLC 15-5 in the first half and 21-5 overall for the match, but the coach was felt his players could push a bit more and saw them do just that following the halftime break.

"I thought we had a good second half," Yorke said. "We came out and we played strong; we played quick; the tempo was increased and the defending was good and we created a lot of chances."

Troy-Mikal Oliger scored the first goal for PLU, taking a corner pass from Brian Lefavour into the net in the 11th minute. Derek Johnson struck next for the Lutes, picking up his second goal of the season in the 44th minute off a pass from Giancarlo Santoro.

The Lutes grabbed their final insurance goal in the 81st minute, as Rigoberto Loreto scored the first goal of his PLU career off a pass from Joe Oleginski. Pacific Lutheran had several other scoring opportunities in the match, but Warrior goalkeeper Jon Stewart made numerous impressive stops among his 11 saves. Joe Rayburn finished with a pair of saves while earning his second shutout of the season in goal for the Lutes.
