PARKLAND – Derek Johnson scored twice in the first half and the Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team pulled away to a 4-0 nonconference victory over Evergreen on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Pacific Lutheran improved to 4-0 with the win, giving the Lutes wins in their first four games of the season for the first time since 1998. They return to action next weekend with two more nonconference home matches, beginning Friday at 5 p.m. against Southwestern.
After scoring once in Friday night's win over Wisconsin Lutheran, Johnson added his third and fourth goals of the season in the opening period. He put the Lutes on the board in only the sixth minute when he took a pass from Giancarlo Santoro in front of the goal and knocked it in from close range, and he added another in the 32nd minute when he took a corner kick pass from Rigoberto Loreto in the box.
Loreto picked up a goal of his own in the 53th minute, bending a free kick into the net from the right side to give him a pair of scores for the weekend. He then finished the match with one more assist, again sending a corner kick into the play for Brian Lefavour to tally the score.
Pacific Lutheran finished with 12 shots in the match while limiting Evergreen to only four. The contest included tight defense that led to a total of 33 fouls and three cards between the two teams. Mike Arguello played all 90 minutes in goal, making one save to earn his first PLU shutout.
