PARKLAND - The Pacific Lutheran Men's Soccer team ended their losing streak with a big win against Whitman Saturday afternoon. The Lutes took down Missionaries 2-0 after losing to them two weeks ago. PLU now has an even 7-7 overall record and a 4-4-conference record.
A penalty kick gave the Lutes a good start in the first half. Diego Aceves took a penalty kick and made the shot clean into the upper corner of the goal, putting the Lutes up 1-0 going into halftime. This goal, at the 34th minute of play gave Aceves his first goal of the season.
Going into the second half up by one, the Lutes furthered their lead in the 70th minute with a goal by Justin Manao. Bennett Bugbee assisted Manao, giving Bugbee six assists this season.
The Lutes outshot the Missionaries 20-11 with six shots on goal compared to Whitworth's five. PLU keeper Mike Arguello played all 90 minutes and made five saves. Whitman keeper Niko Contos made two saves in his 34 minutes of play, Whitman keeper Stuart Ellsworth made no saves but gave two goals in his 56 minutes of play.
The Lutes will play again Sunday at 2:30 against Whitworth. When the Lutes played the Pirates last, the Pirates won 1-0. Whitworth currently stands in second place in the Northwest Conference. Whitworth tied to University of Puget Sound Saturday afternoon, 1-1.
