Lutes end weekend with a close 4-3 loss to Whitworth

PARKLAND - Pacific Lutheran Men's Soccer was dealt a tough hand this afternoon in their game against Whitworth. The Lutes fell to the Pirates 4-3 and both teams put all they had onto the field. The Lutes' record now stands at 7-8 overall and 4-5 in conference. With this win, Whitworth continues to stand at second in the Northwest rankings, just behind University of Puget Sound.

PLU's co-captains paired to made the first goal of the game. Kevin Wien made a clean goal for the Lutes off of a corner kick from Justin Manao. Wien made the goal from 10 yards out, giving the Lutes a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute. This was Wien's first goal of the season.

The Pirates gained two goals from penalty kicks within ten minutes. Michael Ramos made a penalty kick passed Mike Arguello in the 36th minute. Five minutes later, Sam Engle made another penalty kick putting the Pirates up 2-1 on the Lutes going into halftime.

Ahead by one, Whitworth gained a bigger lead in the beginning of the second with two more goals. Whitworth's Sam Engle, standing at 6'4 made a header over the Lutes from a corner kick by Spencer Wolfe. Engle made the goal from about 10 yards out in the 51st minute, bringing Whitoworth up 3-1.

Whitworth's Tyler Clarke made a goal from six yards out with an assist by Robby Ubben. The goal put the Pirates up 4-1 over the Lutes in the 73rd minute.

Down in the second half, with time running out, the Lutes made two goals back to back. Eddie Na found his speed in the 75th minute, clearing all Pirate players to make a goal for the Lutes from the top of the 18. Na's goal was his fourth of the season.

Na took another goal from the Pirate keeper Timmy Costa four minutes later from the top of the 18. Na, with an assist by Manao, brought the score to 4-3 in the 79th minute of play.

The Lutes continued to look for one more goal to push the game into overtime but were unable to find the opportunity. The Pirates outshot the Lutes 21-18 with 10 shots on goal compared to PLU's nine. PLU's keeper Mike Arguello played all 90 minutes and made five saves. Whitworth's keeper Costa had six saves in his 90 minutes of play.

The Lutes will return next weekend to take on Linfield and Willamette on Saturday and Sunday, both games will start at 2:30.
