SPOKANE -- The Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team fell to ninth-ranked Northwest Conference leader Whitworth 1-0 at the Pirate's home field Saturday. With the loss, the Lutes now have a 3-2 conference record and a 6-5 overall record.
Whitworth's Karl Muelheims made the one and only goal of the game in the 53rd minute of play. Muelheims currently stands with five goals for the Pirates. Muelheims made the shot from only a couple yards away, putting it into the left side of the net, out of keeper Mike Arguello's reach.
Whitworth outshot Pacific Lutheran 17-7 with four shots on goal compared to PLU's three. Arguello had three saves and played the whole game. Whitworth keeper Timmy Costa made three saves as well, giving the Lutes nothing.
The Lutes will move onto Whitman tomorrow. Jordan Downing remains the lead scorer for the Lutes with six goals this season and Bennett Bugbee has the most assists this season with five. PLU's record against Whitman stands at 45-9-1 and the Lutes have won 18 out of the last 22 games between the Lutes and the Missionaries.
PLU will take on Whitman Sunday at 2:30 in Walla Walla.
