THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – After winning their fourth straight season opener on Friday against Redlands, the Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team fell 1-0 to California Lutheran Sunday evening, ending the Lutes' first weekend of competition with a 1-1 record.
In 2013, the Lutes beat the Kingsmen 2-0 in the season opener. This weekend PLU did not have the same luck, falling as CLU's Zach Larson scored the first goal seven minutes into play, assisted by Gabriel Fernando.
The singular goal was enough for the Kingsmen to stay in the lead while their keeper, Jack Duncan, held off the Lutes for the rest of the game with three saves. California Lutheran took an overall advantage during the game by taking 13 shots to PLU's 10. PLU keeper Mike Arguello made two saves while playing all 90 minutes.
The Lutes will continue their nonconference season with home matches against Gustavus Adolphus on Friday and UC Santa Cruz on Sunday.
