PARKLAND -- Gustavus Adolphus scored three times to pull away from Pacific Luthearn 3-0 in nonconference men's soccer action Friday.
Going into their first home game, the Lutes had a 1-1 record after returning from California. The Lutes were looking to pick up some wins on their home field but Gustavus Adolphus' offense outburst left the Lutes with a 1-2 record and the Golden Gusties with a 3-1 record.
Nick Kieser, assisted by Jason Shwab for GAC, made the first goal of the game in the fifth minute. Shwab played a key role in GAC's offense, scoring the next two goals for GAC. Shwab, assisted by Konnor Tranoris, headed a goal in the 39th minute of play from eight yards to bring the Golden Gusties up 2-0 on the Lutes. Shwab also made the final goal of the game in the 48th minute with an assist by David Lilly off of a corner kick.
PLU's keeper, Mike Arguello, played all 90 minutes and made three saves. GAC's keeper, Brandon Shmid, made two saves in the first 47 minutes and Brett Ylonen took his position and made one save during the last 44 minutes with the Lutes unable to score on either keeper.
Rigoberto Loreto took the most shots for the Lutes with three total, including two on goal. Throughout the game the Gusties had an advantage by taking 13 shots to the Lutes' nine. The Lutes made three shots on goal while the Gusties made seven.
The Lutes will play UC Santa Cruz on Sunday for their second home game of the season. They are 0-2-1 all-time against the Banana Slugs. The two teams last played in 2009 with the Banana Slugs winning 1-0 in double overtime.
