THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Eighteenth-ranked Pacific Lutheran fell victim to a three-set sweep by No. 4 Cal Lutheran before taking a 3-0 victory over Redlands to finish 3-1 at the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational. The Lutes were swept by CLU with set scores of 23-25, 18-25 and 18-25. In the late afternoon match, the Lutes completed the sweep of the Bulldogs with scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-7.
"A great weekend for us. Cal Lu is a very good team that caused us some trouble," head coach Kevin Aoki commented. "We came out of the match knowing we can play with a top five team but will have to get better as the season moves on."
Next up for the Lutes is a Wednesday, Sept. 10 matchup at Evergreen State. This will be PLU's final preseason game before starting conference play at home on Friday, Sept. 19 against the Whitworth Pirates.
CLU 3, PLU 0
With the sweep, Cal Lutheran handed the Lutes their first loss of the season. The Regals held PLU to a .197 hitting percentage in comparison to CLU's .327 clip. Lucy Capron and Kylai Cooley tallied 11 kills apiece, Samantha North set up the offense with 36 assists and Amber Aguiar had 17 digs.
For the Regals, junior Pua Mo'okini-Oliveira led a balanced attack with nine kills and a .529 hitting percentage.
PLU 3, Redlands 0
All PLU players saw playing time in the late afternoon matchup against Redlands as the Lutes held the Bulldogs to a -.068 hitting percentage. Capron led a balanced Lute attack with seven kills in addition to her 10 digs. North tallied 27 assists and Aguiar contributed 15 digs. Michaela Edgers led with five total blocks.
Redlands took the first point in the opening set but thereafter trailed the Lutes, unable to reclaim the lead. In the second set, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead to get things started. The Lutes quickly rallied back to push a 7-7 tie. The set would see two more tie scores before PLU went on to notch 10 of the final 13 points to take the second set 25-17. The Lutes stunned the Bulldogs in the third and final set, scoring 20 of the first 24 points on their way to the 25-7 set victory to complete the sweep.
