NEWBERG, Ore. – Bryce Miller's layup put PLU up one point with 16 seconds to play, but Eli Graham made a jumper with four seconds on the clock as George Fox defeated Pacific Lutheran 73-72 in Northwest Conference men's basketball action Friday night at Wheeler Sports Center.
Pacific Lutheran falls to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while George Fox improves to 4-8 overall and 2-1 in the NWC. The Lutes return to action Saturday, when they will travel to Portland to take on Lewis & Clark at 6 p.m.
Miller posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead PLU in both categories. Brandon Lester tallied 14 points and Austen Trent Wilson added 13 for the Lutes. JJ Lacey scored 16 points to lead George Fox as four Bruins reached double-figures, and Eli Graham scored 15 points and snagged 12 rebounds for the double-double.
The game featured 13 lead changes, although PLU led for more than 31 minutes of play. The Lutes scored seven straight points late in the first half to take their largest lead of the night when Kevin McCrossin's jumper made it 36-26 with 4:17 remaining in the period. PLU went into halftime with an eight-point lead at 45-37.
George Fox scored the first four points of the second period and used a 12-5 run to pull within one point four minutes after the break. PLU held off the Bruins at that point and maintained the lead until the final three minutes of play, stretching its lead back to as many as seven points.
A three-pointer by Jonny Howard put George Fox on top for the first time since the first half at 69-68, but Miller responded with a layup to make it 70-69 with just over two minutes remaining. A layup by Lacey again put the hosts on top by one, and Miller again followed with a layup after rebounding his own missed shot. That made it 72-71 in favor of PLU with 16 seconds remaining, but Graham made the game-winning jumper with four seconds remaining to pull out the win for the Bruins.
