Lutes open 2015 season with 3-0 road sweep of Evergreen

OLYMPIA – Lucy Capron and Chloe Epker tallied 10 kills apiece as the 23rd-ranked Pacific Lutheran volleyball team swept Evergreen by set scores of 28-26, 25-17 and 25-23 in the 2015 season opener Tuesday night.

The opening set saw 11 tie scores and four lead changes, as a four-point PLU streak fought off Evergreen's set point and sent the contest to extra points. Evergreen had two more set point opportunities before the Lutes closed out the win with three straight points to finish the opener with an 8-2 run. Capron's kill gave PLU the set point advantage, while Roshel Muzzall clinched the 28-26 win with a service ace.

PLU carried that momentum into the start of the second set, scoring the first three points before Evergreen rallied to tie it up at 6-6. The Geoducks took a 12-10 lead before a kill by Epker sparked an 8-1 PLU run that put the Lutes up five points. Three kills by Capron in a four-point stretch helped the Lutes put it away as they closed out the 25-17 win.

The third set saw PLU open with six of the first seven points before Evergreen again rallied to tie it up. That didn't last, however, as an 8-3 PLU run put the Lutes up by five. The Geoducks gave one final push late before one final Epker kill gave PLU the set and match win.

Epker's PLU debut came with a .444 attack percentage and double-digit kills, while Capron hit .350 and led the Lutes with six digs. Kendle Valade-Nunez led the Lutes with 20 assists in her first collegiate action, while Alyssa Workman added 11 assists. For the match, PLU hit .262 as a team and limited Evergreen to a .145 attack percentage.

The Lutes head to Michigan this weekend for the Calvin Tournament. They will take on John Carroll and Defiance on Friday before closing out the weekend against top-ranked tournament host Calvin and Thomas More on Saturday.
