Aceves' two goals lead Lutes to 2-0 win over George Fox in NWC opener

Box Score

PARKLAND – Diego Aceves scored in each half as the Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team opened the 2015 Northwest Conference season with a 2-0 home win over George Fox Saturday afternoon.

Pacific Lutheran got on the board early in the match, as Eddie Na and Joel Frykholm combined to set Aceves up on the left side about eight yards from the net for the goal in the 18th minute of play.

"It was a good combination goal," Aceves said. "They crossed and found me in the box, and I lucked out and shot it and scored it."

PLU kept the pressure on throughout the match, finishing the day with a 16-9 shot advantage while forcing George Fox goalkeeper Murray Noble to make six saves. Aceves' second goal put the match away with just under five minutes remaining, as a handball in the box set up a penalty kick opportunity and the Lute forward converted for the 2-0 lead.

"It was a good game," Aceves said. "We're all grinding out that win. John told us to keep grinding because George Fox always comes in with a lot of energy. It was a good team performance, and we got the three points, which is a good thing for the start of the season."

Mike Arguello earned the shutout after playing all 90 minutes in goal for the Lutes, tallying three saves in the match. With their record improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, the Lutes will wrap the weekend Sunday against Pacific. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.

"The opening weekend of Northwest Conference play is always very difficult," PLU head coach John Yorke said. "I thought that we did well to battle through some of the mistakes that we made to get the win."
