Football Rolls Pioneers 48-14 on Senior Day

Box Score

Written by Student Assistant Christian Bond

PUYALLUP, Wash. – Senior's accounted for five of the seven touchdowns scored by the Pacific Lutheran University football team on Saturday as the Lutes rolled Northwest Conference rival Lewis & Clark College 48-14 on Senior Day at Sparks Stadium.

Jon Schaub got the start at quarterback for the Lutes (5-3, 4-2 NWC). Schaub scored three touchdowns in the first quarter. The first was a 31-yard pass to fellow senior Kellen Westering. Later, Schaub did it himself with a two yard run. Finally, Juston Lind caught a 38-yard pass from Schaub. The Senior quarterback finished the day four-for-five with 83 yards to go with his three touchdowns.

"I had such a blast," Schaub said. "Not only when I was in, but when Walker LaVoy was in as well. It was fun to watch, fun to be apart of, and I'm looking forward to watching next week."

Walker LaVoy took over at quarterback after the first quarter for the Lutes. The Lute offense didn't skip a beat. LaVoy threw touchdown passes to Lind and Marc Gallant. LaVoy finished the day 15-for-18 for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

PLU quarterbacks we aided by a successful run game. Darin Hardgrove ran for over 100 yards for the second week in a row. Hardgrove ran for 103 yards on nine carries. Hardgrove's longest run came on a 33-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter.

"The offensive line, 100 percent," Hardgrove said. "They are knocking heads, making blocks. It comes with belief in the line, and we have that completely now."

The PLU defense continued to make plays. The Lutes held the Pioneer (0-8, 0-6 NWC) offense to 262 total yards of offense. L&C passed for 197 yards, and ran for 65 yards. The Lute defense was great on third downs, holding for Pioneers to converting 33 percent on third downs.

Tanner Perry led the team in tackles. Perry had seven tackles with one coming for loss. Derek Chase had six tackles. Justyn Simmons had four tackles. Anthony Bautista jumped up and grabbed an interception late in the fourth quarter to seal the deal for the Lutes.

"It's an awesome group of guys to play with," Perry said. "I'm blessed to be out there with them. We have three goals we try to do every game; get better, compete, and enjoy the trip. No matter who we play, where we play them, or the conditions of the game, it's all about those three things."

The Lutes wrap up their season next weekend in McMinnville, Oregon against nationally-ranked Linfield College at 1 p.m.
