TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team had an eventful start to the weekend, extending its win streak to six on Saturday at East Field with a 1-0 victory over Northwest Conference rival Whitworth University.
The Lutes (12-4, 8-2 NWC) started the game with a majority of the possession, firing off three shots during the first half while the Pirates (4-9-3, 3-5-2 NWC) didn't find any shots on goal. Despite an aggressive first half, the game remained deadlocked at 0-0 at the intermission.
The second half started out well for the Lutes, when
Nick Brundage found the goal off a free kick outside the box in the 50th minute. This shot motivated the Lutes to get multiple more goal opportunities off in the next 40 minutes but unfortunately were unable to find the net a second time. PLU had six shots to Whitworth's three.
The Lute defense kept Whitworth at bay as goalkeeper
RJ Noll didn't even need to make a save to earn the clean sheet.
"It was a very hard fought game. I thought we continued our run of being good defensively and the guys competed very hard. Lots of good effort from everyone today.
Nick Brundage with another great strike off of the free kick was awesome to see as well. Really proud of these guys again today. Tomorrow will be very difficult so we will need to bring a great effort," said Head Coach
John Yorke.
PLU closes the homestand tomorrow, facing Whitman College at 2:30 p.m.
