Seniors Power Lutes Past Pios 28-14 in Season Finale

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Pacific Lutheran University football team wrapped up the 2018 season on a positive note on Saturday, getting tremendous production from the senior class and jumping out to a three touchdown lead en route to a 28-14 victory over host Lewis & Clark College at Griswold Stadium.

Pioneer (2-7, 1-6 Northwest Conference) miscues set the table for the Lutes' opening two scores of the day with senior Anthony Louthan plunging across the goalline for both touchdowns.

Senior Zanon Fulbright hopped on a muffed punt on the Pios' 32-yard line and the Lutes (4-5, 3-4 NWC) needed just three plays to find paydirt with senior Walker LaVoy hitting Louthan on a nine-yard pass to stake a 7-0 lead with 1:18 left in the opening quarter.

Early in the second quarter saw L&C fumble another punt return with the Lutes setting up shop on the Pios' 25-yard line. The Lutes again needed just three plays with Louthan rumbling in from four yards out to build the lead to 14-0. Later in the quarter LaVoy hit senior Ethan McElderry on a 45-yard pass to up the lead to 21-0.

Lewis & Clark got on the board with 10:59 left in the third quarter but the Lutes responded with another touchdown just three minutes later with a three yard pass from LaVoy to Deion Bonilla capping off a nine-play, 65-yard drive.

The Pios would add another score in the fourth but it was too little, too late, as the Lutes held on for the win.

"I was very proud of the effort our senior class put on the field today," said Head Coach Brant McAdams. "They played hard for each other and made some big plays today. The seniors have obviously played a huge role in the transition under new leadership and this win builds great momentum into the offseason and our recruiting efforts for 2019."

LaVoy finished with 271 yards and three touchdowns in his final game under center while Louthan wrapped up his career by doing a little bit of everything. Louthan racked up two touchdowns, ran for 62 yards, caught five balls for 28 yards and average 44.7 yards per punt on his six kicks, of which two sailed beyond 50 yards.

Wesley Nixon led the receiving corps with 99 yards on six receptions while senior Matt Anthony and Hunter Briggs led the defense with eight tackles each.
