MONMOUTH, Ore.- The Pacific Lutheran University men's basketball team opened its exhibition slate on Saturday evening, falling 106-48 to Division II Western Oregon University.
"We know there are two highly-ranked programs and a handful of other really good teams in our league that will try to do a lot of what we saw here tonight," said Head Coach
Chad Murray. "This was an opportunity for our young team to get an extreme idea of what's in store for us later in the year. We weren't focused on the outcome. We focused on items we can control no matter the opponent and how we handle adverse situations. We learned a lot tonight and guys performed well in spots and exposed some area of improvement that will need to be addressed. This experience will ultimately help us down the road."
The host Wolves led wire-to-wire, sinking 17 three-pointers on the night. WOU opened the game on an 8-2 run and enjoyed a 58-26 edge at the halftime intermission.
14 total Lutes saw time on the court with Tyler Combs leading the scoring efforts with 11 points while
Zac Webb and
Nasseen Gutierrez-Orozco both adding seven.
Kelton Williams and
Jordan Thomas paced the Lutes on the glass with four rebounds apiece. 23 of PLU's 48 points came from bench production.
The Lutes open the regular season next Friday, hosting SUNY College at Old Westbury at 6 p.m. inside Olson Gymnasium.
