TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University football team loads up the bus one last time this season for a faceoff in Portland, Oregon against Lewis & Clark College. The Lutes' (3-5, 2-4 Northwest Conference) are looking to dominate this last game together and celebrate a season of growth, comradery, friendship and brotherhood.
Two teammates who know friendship far beyond the football field are brothers
Anthony Bautista and
Nicholas Bautista.
"Being able to make memories with your brother in college is pretty awesome. On the field, communication is key for a defense and that comes super natural to us, we're always on the same page," said junior linebacker Nicholas.
"On the field it's easy for us, on defense you're one of eleven and if one of those eleven doesn't do their job it can mess everyone up, I never have to worry about Nick missing a tackle, I trust him," said senior defensive back Anthony.
The brothers say they are known to be "hip and hip" always around each other. The reason being, "It's fun, we have a good time together. When we travel we are pretty goofy, we run hotel ice machines low for ice baths," says Anthony.
The Bautista brothers are not the only set of siblings on the Lute football team.
Carson Barnett and
Cody Barnett also understand the fun of playing collegiate football together.
The Barnett brothers were born Lutes with both parents having gone to PLU.
"Our dad was a captain on the 1993 NAIA Championship football team, it just felt like home here," says Carson, who is currently working on earning his master's degree in business.
"Having someone you know so well, and being able to talk to about the defense if I'm struggling he can help me out and visa versa is really nice," said sophomore defensive back Cody.
"We can keep each other accountable, we have grown up together so we can talk to each other differently than I would with someone else," Carson says of their ability to communicate.
"Our first game this year, we were down playing in California and it was so cool because I could look over and there was Cody, I was just thinking, 'how special is that?' We get to play college football together," said Carson.
These siblings and the rest of the brothers in black and gold suit up one final time this Saturday at 1 p.m. against Lewis & Clark College.
