TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team wrapped up the weekend undefeated at East Field, rallying past Pacific University in a Northwest Conference clash on Sunday afternoon.
The Lutes (8-4, 4-2 NWC) dominated the first half with a majority of the possession, taking eight shots compared to three by the Boxers (1-6-3, 0-4-2 NWC), owning a 9-0 edge in corner kicks but a penalty kick in the 44th minute gave Pacific a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half of a very aggressive game, the Lutes fought hard to equalize the game. They finally got their opportunity in the 79th minute, when
Nick Brundage finished off of a beautiful free kick right outside the penalty box. The Lutes found the win in the 88th minute off of a strong finish by
Joe Sammartino assisted by
Jackson Moore. The final score was a 2-1 win by the Lutes over the Boxers.
Overall the PLUÂ had 19 shots in the game compared to Pacific's total of four shots.
"I was really proud of the guys this weekend," said Head Coach
John Yorke, "They showed a resolve in both games and especially today, that is really important in our team growth. To overcome the adversity today and come back in the last ten minutes to win is really exciting for this group and is an important part of the learning process in this conference."
The Lutes return to the field next Friday against the University of Puget Sound.
