Men's Soccer Steamrolls Brooklyn, 5-0

TACOMA, Wash. - Ben Blakely netted his first career goal on a penalty kick in the 85th minute as the Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team steamrolled an overmatched Brooklyn College 5-0 on Friday afternoon in the home opener at East Field.

"Winning is always a great experience but I don't think as a group we were overly pleased with how we played," said Head Coach John Yorke. "But there were some really good things that came out of it. We were able to get a lot of guys some good experience in playing time which will help the growth of our team."

Archie Caldwell got things rolling in the 14th minute, capitalizing on a defensive miscue by the Bulldogs (0-4) and scoring off a feed from Chris Trussel. Zachary Manao doubled the Lutes' (4-0) advantage in the 38th minute before Derek Stone hooked up with Jackson Moore in the 36th minute as PLU enjoyed a 3-0 lead at the halftime intermission.

Pacific Lutheran added to the lead in the 67th minute with Nick Brundage scoring off a feed from Jaisen Zurfluh before Blakely capped off the day by nailing a penalty kick with just over five minutes remaining.

"One of the highlights for everybody was Ben Blakely getting his first goal. Archie getting hio second goal in two games is a big positive. He has potential to be a really good goal scorer here and it's great for him to gain confidence by getting some early in the season."

It was keeper by committee for the Lutes as RJ Noll, Cole Weaver, and Marcus Martin collaborated for the shutout as PLU enjoyed a 21-5 edge in shots. A total of 27 Lutes saw action on the pitch in the blowout win.

The Lutes are back in action on Sunday at 5 p.m., traveling to California to face the University of Redlands.
