NEWBERG, Ore. – The Pacific Lutheran University football team played George Fox University to a 14-14 tie in the first half, but the Bruins erupted for 20 points in the third quarter to earn a 37-14 victory on Saturday at Stoffer Family Stadium.
Trailing 7-0 in the first quarter, the Lute offense showed off its big-play ability on the first of two occasions. Facing third down and one at its own 18-yard line,
Cody Brown broke off an 82-yard touchdown run and an
Alex Brost extra-point tied the score at 7-7.
After both teams traded possession, the Bruins took a seven-point lead for the second time when Jaden Sheffrey connected with Justin Trimble II for a 14-yard touchdown. PLU would answer in the second quarter when Lute quarterback
Bryce Missey hooked up with
Ryan Chang II for an 80-yard touchdown.
The PLU defense got three straight stops before the half, including a sack on 4
th and 11 at their own 24-yard line by Myk Tuiolemotu. When the Lutes received the ball back, they chose to run out the clock and head to the half 14-14.
In the second half, the Bruins scored three times, with PLU possessing the ball on just one occasion. George Fox received the kick to start the third quarter and took a lead they wouldn't relinquish after a nine play 50-yard drive that was capped by a Sheffrey seven-yard run.
After a Lute three-and-out, the Bruins scored again to increase their advantage to 27-14. Needing a nice drive to get back in the game, George Fox wouldn't give the visitors the opportunity as they recovered the kickoff at the PLU 19-yard line. Sheffey hit paydirt for the second time of the half from 10 yards out and the Bruins took a 34-14 advantage.
The Lutes threatened to cut the score in their first possession of the fourth quarter. Missey completed four straight passes to get the ball down to the George Fox 10-yard line, but a fumble by
Alex Rendon allowed the Bruin defense to get off the field. On their final possession of the game, PLU entered enemy territory again before stalling out at the George Fox 42-yard line after three straight incompletions by
Braden Amorozo.
The PLU ground game had a successful day with 146 yards on just 21 carries, good for a 7.0 average. Brown went over 100 yards with 127 on 16 carries and a touchdown. Missey was efficient on the day, completing 17 of 29 passes for 190 yards a touchdown. Chang II had a big day because of the long touchdown, but his other five catches were good for just 12 yards. Rendon also had six catches to tie for the team high.
