TACOMA, Wash. - Pacific Lutheran University's blossoming ROTC program is home to many incredible Lutes, including several student-athletes.
Ali Smith, a junior MSIII Cadet and Ranger Challenge Team Member, is also an avid rower for the women's award-winning team. After giving ROTC a try during her first year at PLU, Smith enjoyed her experience and decided to continue with the program.
As rowing is a physically demanding sport, Smith believes her performance in ROTC is benefited by her participation in Lute athletics.
"Rowing definitely boosts my physical fitness scores for ROTC, it has taught me how to train effectively, and given me the grit to get it all done," Smith said. "ROTC and rowing have also taught me a ton in terms of leadership, as well as how to navigate and promote great team dynamics.
Smith's college experience had been shaped by her decisions to join both ROTC and women's rowing. She values the opportunity to be involved in a variety of ways on campus.
"I get to be a part of three incredible teams: PLU Women's Rowing, Ranger Challenge, and the ROTC class of 2021," Smith said. "It's a great feeling to care about such a breadth of different people, and to watch yourself grow in so many different areas. It's challenging, but it keeps me invested."
Sophomore Jacob Espinosa and freshman Kord Tuttle share similar positive experiences. ]
In order to balance involvement in both ROTC and football, Espinosa focuses on keeping an open line of communication to juggle his responsibilities.
"It gets really hard sometimes but is very doable, it just takes a lot of determination and even more communication" Espinosa said. "I am constantly talking to both Cadre, teachers, and coaches to make sure that we are all on the same page and to do my best to balance all of it."
Both Espinosa and Tuttle have intended to serve in the armed forces and military since high school. As a first-year, Tuttle appreciates having ROTC and football to call home.
"My favorite part about being involved in ROTC and football is that I have two communities that I can connect with."
Espinosa shared similar sentiments, stating his enjoyment of "the comradery and having two huge families that support and encourage me; that help me to the best I can be."
