Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Season Ends in Second City

CHICAGO – Northwest Conference Offensive Player and Freshman of the Year Zak Gregg gave the Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team life when he headed in a goal to tie the score at 1-1, but North Park University answered with five straight second-half tallies to advance in the NCAA Tournament.

"It was not the ending we wanted or expected," said PLU Head Coach John Yorke.  "North Park is a very good team.  They were very good on the day.  We made some uncharacteristic mistakes and were punished for them, but I thought we rallied well and had a period of the game where we looked like we could get a result.  Unfortunately, we allowed them to get on a roll and they punished us for it."

PLU (14-5-2) was playing catch up from the start as the Vikings scored just three minutes into the game as Shatil Khoury took a steal from Erlend Kemers and beat the Lute defense.  The rest of the first half was fairly even and the PLU offense started clicking towards the end of the first 45 minutes.  The Lutes made North Park make three saves in the first half, but were unable to get on the scoreboard.

Gregg knotted things up 12 minutes into the second half off of a beautiful cross by Zachary Manao.  It was the freshman's team-leading 16th goal of the season, while it was Manao's eighth assist of the year.

However, North Park wouldn't be denied, scoring five times in the span of 27 minutes in the second half.  Six different Vikings scored on the day, while Peder Olsen and Kemers both had two assists.  Cole Weaver made four saves in the game for PLU and Gregg and Archie Caldwell both had three shots, two of which were on goal.

"Regardless of how today went I am extremely proud of this team, especially this group of seniors," said Yorke.  "I could not have asked for a better group of people to help lead this program over the last few years.  I know we already can't wait to get going on the 2020 season."

The Lutes finish the year with 14 victories, the most since 2015 and just one shy of the school record of 15 set in 2011 and tied in 2015.
