TACOMA, Wash. - Colleges and universities around the nation are celebrating the 150th anniversary of college football throughout the 2019 season. As part of the celebration, GoLutes.com will cover some of the greatest moments in the history of the storied gridiron program at Pacific Lutheran University. The sixth part of this series will cover the Lutes' 1993 season that culminated in winning the program's third national title.Â
Â
The Lutes won their first NAIA Division II national title in 1980 before returning back to the top again in 1987. Pacific Lutheran would qualify for the NAIA playoffs in four of the next five years, including a national title game appearance in 1991 before winning it all again in 1993.
Â
Coming off a second round playoff exit the previous season, the Lutes took a summer trip to Germany, facing off against the European powerhouse Hamburg Blue Devils in the UNICEF Bowl. The Lutes rolled the Blue Devils 42-18 in front of 15,000 fans. That success proved a harbinger for things to come during the 1993 season.Â
Â
The Lutes opened the 1993 campaign with a 20-20 draw against 1992 national runner-up Linfield College inside the Tacoma Dome. That tie would be the Lutes' only blemish of the season, winning the next 12 games to hoist the national title.Â
Â
Anchored by a high-octane offense, the Lutes put up 43 against Eastern Oregon University, 50 against Southern Oregon University, and 48 against Willamette University before outdueling Central Washington University 49-48 in the Columbia Football Association- Mount Rainier League opener.
Â
The Lutes flattened Canadian rival Simon Fraser University 42-4 the following week before piling on 45 at Whitworth University, 37 at Western Washington University, before wrapping up the league title with a 41-7 win over the University of Puget Sound inside the Tacoma Dome.
Â
Pacific Lutheran only got better once the NAIA Division II playoffs rolled around, crushing Cumberland University 61-7 in the opener at Sparks Stadium before earning a 35-17 win over Central Washington. The Lutes crushed Baker University 52-14 in the national semifinals before obliterating Westminster College 50-20 in the national title game in Portland, Oregon, behind quarterback Marc Weekly who threw for 441 yards and four touchdowns. The victory capped off the season with a 12-0-1 record, while setting school record for total points (573), points per game (44.1), total offense (6,105 yards), yards per game (469.6), passing yards (3,829), and passing yards per game (294.5).Â
Â
Head Coach Frosty Westering was named national coach of the year while Weekly and linebacker Ted Riddall earned First Team All-American honors. Tight end Gavin Stanley was named Second Team All-American while Jeff Douglass (OL), Chad Barnett (RB), Albert Jackson (DL), Jason Thiel (DL), and Judd Benedick (LB) all earned Honorable Mention All-American accolades at the conclusion of the season.Â
