PORTLAND, Ore. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's basketball squad tallied the opening 10 points and never looked back on Sunday afternoon, leading wire-to-wire in a 74-55 victory over Northwest Conference rival Lewis & Clark College.
Leighton Kingma and
Jordan Thomas provided a one-two punch for the Lutes in the victory, each finishing with a double-double and combining for 42 points and 24 rebounds.
Kingma hit two threes in the opening three minutes sandwiched around buckets from Thomas as the Lutes (8-14, 5-9 NWC) built an early 10-0 advantage. The Pioneers (7-16, 3-11 NWC) closed within a basket with 8:09 left in the opening half only to see PLU score 10 of the next 12, building a double-digit buffer on a
Zac Webb layup. The lead continued to swell with PLU owning a 38-19 lead at the halftime intermission with Kingma single-handedly matching the point production of the host Pios.
The Lutes held a double-digit lead the entire second half en route to the season sweep of Lewis & Clark.
"We had to really recalibrate after the loss on Friday and then the postponement of this game on Saturday," said Head Coach
Chad Murray. "Our guys did a great job adjusting and adapting to the changes. I viewed this as an extreme positive as we got another day to rest but also to bond as a group. We had a great team meal last night and shared some laughs and enjoyed the time."
Kingma led the Lutes with 26 points, hitting five three-pointers while also netting 10 rebounds. Thomas added 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds while
Grayson Peet had seven points.
Kelton Williams led the Lutes with five assists.
"Leighton had a huge weekend and carried us offensively today in the first half. He really did a nice job on the glass along with Jordan. That was one of our keys to the game and took care of that nicely."
PLU shot 45.3 percent (29-for-64) from the field while holding the Pios to shooting an anemic 36.2 percent (21-for-58). The Lutes held a 42-30 rebounding advantage while enjoying a 42-28 edge in points in the paint.
The Lutes open up their final homestand of the season on Friday, hosting nationally-ranked Whitworth University at 6 p.m. inside Olson Gymnasium.
