Baseball Soars Past Eagles, 9-5

ATLANTA, Ga. - Justin Armbruester struck out eight while the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team cranked out 12 hits in a 9-5 victory over Emory University on Friday afternoon.

The Lutes (3-2) wasted little time getting on the board with an Andy Schmitz single to right field scoring Jordan Haworth in the top of the first. Tori Doten would drive in two more as PLU enjoyed a 3-0 advantage after just one inning. Marques Carlson upped the Lute lead to 4-0 in the second inning, singling up the middle to score Haworth.

The host Eagles (1-1) got on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth before PLU padded its lead with two runs in the seventh. Jacob Bockelie belted in Austin Gormley on a single while a Carlson sacrifice fly allowed Haworth to touch home plate for the third time, upping the Lute advantage to 6-1.

Bockelie was at it again in the eighth, scoring King Jimenez-Cruz and Doten on a double to right center field. Emory added three runs in the bottom of the eighth before a Dominick Zombik sacrifice fly brought in Schmitz in the top of the ninth. The Eagles attempted a late rally, pushing across a run in the ninth and had runners on before Alex Gregory closed the door by inducing a groundout and a popup to secure the win.

Bockelie finished two-for-three at the plate with three RBIS while Schmitz cranked out three hits on the day.

Armbruester earned the win, tossing 6 1/3 innings and striking out eight while allowing just four hits.

"Armbruester is our ace and he definitely threw like an ace today," said Head Coach Nolan Soete. "Jacob Mortensen had a good seventh inning and Gregory looked great in the ninth. As a team we had a lot of quality at-bats today. Bockelie, Haworth, and Schmitz were locked in all day. Overall it was a good team win."

The Lutes return to the diamond tomorrow, facing Oglethorpe University at 3 p.m. (Eastern Time).
