TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University softball team earned mixed results in Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader, edging DePauw University 2-1 in the opener before dropping game two by a 4-2 scoreline.
Â
Anna Overland provided the decisive score in the opener, belting a one-out single to score
Samantha Simundson in the bottom of the sixth. Simundson led off the frame with an infield single, advancing to second on a single from
Marley Dyer before a
Bailey Plumb sacrifice bunt moved Simundson to third, setting the table for Overland's RBI hit.
Â
The visiting Tigers drew first blood, scoring a run in the first inning before the Lutes tied the game in the second after working the count and earned four walks, including a bases loaded walk from Plumb to score
Erin McGrath.
Â
Simundson finished the opener two-for-two at the plate to pace the Lutes.Â
Â
Kennedy Robillard went the distance inside the circle, allowing just one walk and striking out two for her seventh win of the season.
Â
DePauw struck first in game two, pushing across a single run in the top of the second before a Simundson solo home run tied the game in the bottom of the second. A Robillard single scored
Becca Sorensen in the third inning but the Tigers tied the game in the fifth and took the lead in the seventh. A Lute throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score before a sacrifice fly brought in an insurance score as DePauw held on for the 4-2 win.
Â
Simundson finished two-for-three at the plate while Sorensen was two-for-four.
Z Ellis was tagged with the decision, pitching all seven innings and striking out two.
"Sam Simundson had a great day at the plate," said Head Coach
Traci Barrett. "She was disciplined and attacked the right pitches with great results. We played solid defense today but just didn't get the runs when we had the opportunities."
Â
The Lutes continue their homestand on Saturday, welcoming Whitworth University to PLU Field for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
