TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team dominated the first half on a beautiful Sunday morning at East Field, but as the morning turned to afternoon, Augsburg University picked up the pace and came back to defeat the Lutes 3-2.
Everything went right for the home team (1-1-0) in the first half as they came out of the gates hot, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. Just 8:27 into the match,
Emmanuel Saah found
Keeton Heggerness for his second goal of the season, as he pitched it ahead to the streaking forward in the box. It was also Saah's second assist in as many games.
Later in the first frame,
Jaisen Zurfluh played the ball perfectly to
Ola Kvindesland who punched the ball right past a frozen Auggie keeper to make the score 2-0. PLU keeper
Cole Weaver made two saves to keep the visitors, scoreless and the Lutes outshot Augsburg 6-4 in the first 45 minutes.
The Auggies (1-0-1), who reached the NCAA Tournament last season and tied the University of Puget Sound to start the year, found their rhythm in the second half. Augsburg scored three unanswered goals, including two in the final 10 minutes to stun the home team.
Lionel Vang assisted on Antonio Magadan's goal to get Augsburg on the scoreboard and blasted a free kick that was headed in by Daniel Hedstrom for the game-winner. Johnny Vu tallied the second goal for the Auggies unassisted.
Freshman
Zak Gregg couldn't score, but was very active on the offensive end, leading the team with five shots and placed three of them on net.
Jackson Moore also had a shot on goal for the Lutes.
Next weekend PLU heads to the Gateway to the West to take on Washington University in St. Louis on Friday and Fontbonne University on Sunday.
