FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Every batter in the Pacific Lutheran University baseball lineup got a hit in the season opener and the Lutes knocked around Pacific University pitching all evening, defeating the Boxers by a 9-6 margin.
PLU (1-0) drew first blood and never looked back on Friday night. A two-run second inning and a four-run fourth had the visitors feeling in good on their opening night of action. In the second,
Tori Doten had a RBI single to get the Lutes on the board and
Dominick Zombik added a sac fly to give starter
Justin Tucker some breathing room.
Zombik struck again in the fourth with a bases clearing triple and
Alex Boyd knocked him in with a base hit in the following at-bat and PLU was up 6-0. The Boxers didn't go down without a fight though, chasing Tucker in the bottom half of a five-run fourth.
Holding a slim 6-5 lead in the sixth, PLU padded their lead with an unearned run that was knocked in by freshman
Ashton Barton on a groundout to second. The Lutes added two more insurance runs in the eighth when
Kenton Robillard and
Andy Schmitz started the inning with a pair of singles, before scoring on a wild pitch and a double play, respectively.
Pacific scored a solo tally in the bottom of the inning on an inside the park home run, but that was all the home team would muster before
Alex Gregory slammed the door to earn the save.
Jacob Mortensen (1-0) earned the victory for PLU in relief of Tucker. The senior tossed five innings and struck out four in the 20 batters he faced. Sophomore
Jordan Haworth and junior
Tori Doten paced the attack with two hits each, while Zombik came through big early with four RBI.
PLU will take tomorrow off before heading to Linfield College on Sunday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
