SEGUIN, Texas- The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team closed out its Texas trip in style on Saturday afternoon, winning both ends of a doubleheader against 23rd-ranked Texas Lutheran University at Katt-Isabel Field. The Lutes (4-6) set the tone early in the opener, pushing across three runs in the second inning.
Cody Bentley got things started with an infield single before
Kenton Robillard drew a walk, advancing Bentley to second. A
Tommy Snyder single brought in Bentley before an error later in the frame allowed Robillard and Snyder to touch home plate for the early 3-0 lead. In the fourth,
Jordan Haworth belted a double, later scoring on a Bentley single while a
Cameron Clem single in the fifth plated
Tori Doten to push the PLU advantage to 5-0.

In game two, the Lutes struck first, pushing across a pair of runs in the opening inning. TLU would tie the scoring in the bottom half of the inning but the Lutes would answer again with three runs in the second.
A Clem single scoring
Dominick Zombik who led off the inning with a walk before a Haworth double scored Doten. A Bentley single plated Clem, giving PLU the 5-2 advantage. TLU would add a run in the bottom of the second but the Lutes would continue to generate runs, getting an RBI double from Zombik in the third, a Robillard sacrifice fly in the fourth before pushing across three in the fifth.
Lute runs in the fifth came courtesy of a Clem RBI single, a Haworth RBI double, and a wild pitch. Texas Lutheran exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth, closing the gap to just one run but the Lutes padded its advantage with four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to secure the doubleheader sweep.
A Doten infield single opened the scoring in the sixth. A
Chase Lariza fielder's choice allowed another Lute run to touch home before a Haworth single scored two. In the seventh it was Doten with a two RBI single while Haworth was at it again with an RBI single.
Haworth was on fire in game two, finishing five-for-five at the plate with five RBIs while Doten was three-for-four, collecting three RBIs while scoring five runs.
Jacob Mortensen earned the win, pitching the opening 4 2/3 innings and striking out two while Gregory closed out the contest, allowing just two hits and striking out three over the final 2 1/3 innings to collect his second save of the day.
"Our players responded well today," said Head Coach
Nolan Soete. "It started in game one on the mound. Tucker did a good job grinding and Gregory was excellent. We had another great performance from Gregory in game two as well. A lot of guys had a big day at the plate. Haworth was on fire today and Clem and Bentley also had a nice day. We finally put all three phases together at the same time against a good team."
The Lutes are back on the diamond next Saturday, hosting crosstown rival University of Puget Sound in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
