Softball Swats Wasps in Arizona Finale

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Pacific Lutheran University softball team returned to the win column on Sunday, edging Emory & Henry College 3-1 before having game two against 24th-ranked DePauw University was suspended due to field conditions to wrap up the NFCA Leadoff Classic.

The Wasps (6-9) took an early leads scratching across a run in the top of the first before the Lutes (5-10) answered with a pair of scores in the bottom of the frame to seize the lead.

Cailey Collado smashed a leadoff single down the right field line, later scoring on a Mikayla Chun double to center field. Chun advanced to third on an error before scoring on an Elise Freund single for the 2-1 advantage.

Pacific Lutheran padded its advantage in the bottom of the third with Chaella Galapon belting a double to left center field. A Freund single advanced Galapon to third before scoring on an infield single from Nanea Kalama in what proved to be the final run of the game.

Kalama finished the game a perfect two-for-two at the plate while Freund finished two-for-three.

Kennedy Robillard picked up the complete game victory, striking out six while allowing just one earned run.

"We didn't play to our ability at the onset of the weekend," said Head Coach Traci Barrett. "Our dugout was the most consistent presence throughout the weekend. Our intent going into today was a strong finish and it was great to put our defense and offense together today for the win. When playing the way we played today, we can compete with all of the teams we played this weekend."

PLU resumes Northwest Conference play on Saturday, squaring off against George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon.
