TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team shut out Pacific University on Saturday 4-0 in Northwest Conference action at East Field.
Ryan Griffith scored and had an assist as the Lutes scored three goals on set pieces to earn three points against the Boxers.
The victory keeps the Lutes (14-4-0 overall, 11-2-0 NWC) on top of the NWC standings with two games to play. With Willamette University's loss to Whitman College on Saturday, the Lutes can clinch a national tournament berth with a win Sunday.
Alex White opened the scoring in the 8
th minute heading home a free kick offering from Griffith. The Lutes doubled their lead in the 35
th minute as
Cole Dobson headed in a corner kick by
Trevor Thompson into the back corner of the net.
Griffith scored his first goal of the season on an olimpico in the 52
nd minute, scoring directly off a corner kick.
Archie Caldwell finished the scoring after a
Brandt Kelly shot on target was punched out and Caldwell slotted home the rebound.
Nicholas Gaston and
Lucas Hempen combined on the shutout for the Lutes, who are back in action at 2:30 p.m. Sunday against George Fox University.
