TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University men's basketball team erased a 13-point deficit on Friday evening, edging University of Redlands 84-83 inside Memorial Fieldhouse in the opening game of the Doug McArthur Classic.
Seth Hall scored the final four points of the game, including a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds to give the Lutes (2-0) the lead for good. Redlands had one final chance but misfired on a jumper as time expired.
"That was a great college basketball game. Both teams competed like crazy for 40 minutes," said Head Coach
Chad Murray.
"I was extremely proud of the way we persevered through the entire game. We just stayed around and eventually we were able to get over the top. We thought
Brett Williams did an incredible job on Duckett and our rebounding in the second half was really strong. I could go down the line. Each player we had in the game had key contributions that helped us pull this one out. That's the sign of a good team. We have lots to improve on but we're looking forward to tomorrow against a really tough Claremont team."
PLU scored the opening eight points of the game but the momentum quickly shifted with the Bulldogs (2-2) scoring 17 of the next 21 to stake a 17-12 lead with 13:55 left in the opening stanza. Redlands kept its foot on the gas with a Neil Owens layup extending the Bulldog lead to 13-points with just over six minutes until halftime. The Lutes chipped away at the deficit, trailing 48-40 at the halftime intermission.
The Lutes whittled the deficit to a single possession on a
Brett Williams three with 17:29 remaining only to see the Bulldogs answer, with Redlands enjoying a 12-point edge with 12:42 left in the game. PLU once again reduced the gap before taking its first lead in the second half on a
Jordan Thomas layup with 3:59 left. It was a one-possession game the rest of the way. Redlands owned a three-point lead after Owens drained a three with 66 seconds left but Redlands was kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Hall hit a layup with 38 ticks left before reclaiming the lead on his free throws with 4.6 seconds left.
Hall finished with a game-high 25 points while
Tyler Ashmore added 17 points and six rebounds. Thomas added 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds and five assists while
Sam Noland tacked on 13 points.
PLU outrebounded Redlands 39-33 and shot 55.8 percent (29-for-52) from the floor, including shooting 58.3 percent (14-for-24) in the second half.
The Lutes are back on the hardwood tomorrow at 4 p.m., facing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
