MCMINNVILLE, Ore. - The Pacific Lutheran University volleyball team cemented its spot in second place in the Northwest Conference standings on Friday evening, rolling host Linfield University 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 21-25, 25-16) inside Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
A model of consistency, the Lutes (15-9, 12-3 NWC) have finished second or better in the NWC standings every season since 2006, including winning 10 league titles.
Pacific Lutheran scored nine of the match's opening 12 points and built a 23-10 lead on a kill from
Ariana Wilson. The Wildcats (5-16, 1-14 NWC) scored eight of the next nine to get within striking distance before a
Baylee Johnson kill secured the set 25-18 in favor of PLU.
Set two was tied at 11 but the Lutes closed the set on a 14-5 run with a
McKenzie Pfeiffer kill giving the Lutes the 25-16 win. Linfield snuck away with the win in set three, scoring five of the final six points after the score was tied at 20.
PLU mopped up the Cats in the fourth, cruising to the 25-16 win to secure the season sweep.
Hailey Iha set the tone offensively with 13 kills with an impressive .524 hitting percentage. Johnson added 10 kills with Pfeiffer and
Breeze Bartle notching nine and eight kills, respectively.
Emily Dulaney had 42 assists while
Halle Hetzler had another massive effort defensively, finishing with a match-high 37 digs. Hetzler has 84 digs over the past two matches.
"This was a great win for us tonight," said Head Coach
Kevin Aoki. "We got to see everyone get some playing time which is important especially because they have all worked so hard this year."
The Lutes wrap up the season tomorrow at 6 p.m. against Pacific University.
