NWC Champion Lutes Tripped Up in Regular Season Finale

TACOMA, Wash. - A late penalty kick tilted the scales in host University of Puget Sound's favor on Saturday afternoon as the Northwest Conference Champion Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer squad fell 1-0 to the Loggers at Baker Stadium to close out the regular season.

The Lutes, NWC Champions for the fourth consecutive season, will learn their NCAA Division III Tournament opponent and location on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in a selection show on NCAA.com.

PLU outshot the host Loggers 6-1 in the opening half, including a 4-0 edge in shots on frame. The second half was also tilted in the Lutes favor, holding a 7-4 advantage in total shots. In the end, a penalty kick with just over three minutes left proved to be the difference-maker with UPS's Cale Spence converting the penalty in what proved to be the lone score of the contest.

Puget Sound's keeper Andrew Matheny had a busy day in net, making seven saves to collect the clean sheet. Of the Lutes' eight shots on goal, four came off the boot of Cris Lozano who finished with six total shots while Robby Guyer had two shots on frame.
