Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lutes Win Fifth Straight

TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's basketball team won its fifth consecutive game on Tuesday afternoon after they knocked off the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz 68-62.

The Lutes (7-2, 2-0 NWC) held the lead for more than 34 minutes of the 40-minute contest inside Olson Gymnasium, with UCSC's largest lead being by just a deuce.  After heading to the locker room up by just three, 35-32, PLU extended the advantage to 14 with a 7-0 run with 14:05 remaining in the game.  The Lutes held a multi-possession advantage to the finish line and cruised to a non-conference win.

"We were really happy to get this one tonight," said Head Coach Chad Murray. "I have a lot of respect for UC Santa Cruz.  They've played a really tough schedule thus far and they've had a lot of games in a short period here lately.  Our energy in the second half on the defensive end was great to begin with and that allowed us to get out in transition and create opportunities for everyone to be involved offensively."

The Lutes survived a tough shooting night from three-point range as they shot just 3-for-16 for the game and were outrebounded 47-34.  Seth Hall led the way offensively with 22 points, while Jordan Thomas added 14 on an efficient 6-for-8 shooting.  Brett Williams chipped in 12 and Brandin Riedel had a solid effort with 12 points and six rebounds.

"I thought Brandin was excellent tonight," said Murray.  "He really did a nice job on the block for us and provided a nice spark in both halves."

In their next time on the floor the Lutes mettle will be tested in Las Vegas.  PLU draws two ranked opponents in No. 23 Maryville College and the No. 19 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.  The Lutes will play the Scots on Tuesday and follow with the Crusaders on Wednesday.  Both tip-offs are scheduled for 9:00 p.m.
