TACOMA, Wash. - A season sweep of crosstown nemesis University of Puget Sound wasn't in the cards for the Pacific Lutheran University volleyball team, falling 3-1 (16-25, 30-28, 31-29. 25-22) in a tightly contested match inside Memorial Field House on Saturday evening.
The Lutes (3-3) headed into the match having won the previous three matches of the season, collecting 3-1 and 3-0 victories at home at Olson Gymnasium on March 5 and 6 before nabbing a five-set victory at UPS last night.
"It was great volleyball tonight even though we didn't come up with the season sweep," said Head Coach
Kevin Aoki.
"Puget Sound played well and we battled them until the end."
Things appeared headed towards a series sweep in the early going with the Lutes scoring 14 of the final 22 points in the opening set to breeze to a 25-16 set win. In the second set, PLU held an early 6-3 advantage only to find itself behind 12-9 after a 5-0 Logger run. Neither team was able to find separation the rest of the set until an attack error and a kill gave the host Loggers the 30-28 win. Set three followed a similar script with Puget Sound coming out on top in a marathon 31-29 set.
UPS wrapped up the match in the fourth, capitalizing on three Lute attack errors to escape with a 25-22 set win to claim the match and avoid the four-match sweep.
Lauren Wilson and
Baylee Johnson were a two-headed attack, both collecting 16 kills with
McKenzie Pfeiffer adding 11 kills and four blocks.
Breeze Bartle claimed seven kills along with five blocks and two service aces.
Emily Dulaney notched 49 assists while defensively
Halle Hetzler had 26 digs, Wilson had 13, and Dulaney had 12.
"We're looking forward to hosting Whitworth next weekend."
The Lutes welcome Whitworth University to Olson Gymnasium for a two-match series beginning on Friday at 7 p.m.
