McMinnville, Ore. – Leading Linfield University 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth, with two outs and a runner on first, the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team was unable to shut the door on the Wildcats as the home team rallied for a 4-3 win.
Trailing 1-0 after five full innings, the Lutes took a 3-1 advantage with a big sixth inning.
Jordan Haworth started the rally with a double down the right field and moved to third on a wild pitch.
Cole Trotignon was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners and
Cody Bentley launched a sacrifice fly to tie the score.
Connor Lemma hit a single and
Ashton Barton was hit by another pitch to load the bases.
Sean Kauffman picked up a RBI with a walk, and Lemma eventually jogged home after a balk by the Wildcat pitcher.
Trotignon was brilliant on the mound, tossing six innings, striking out eight and allowing just the one run.
Spencer Howell was perfect in his two innings of relief, retiring all six batters he faced and struck out a pair. Lute closer
Alex Gregory (0-1) took the loss after getting two outs in the ninth and allowing three runs on three hits.
The Lute attack was paced by Haworth and Lemma had two base hits each. Haworth's double was PLU's only extra-base hit of the afternoon.
PLU will make its home debut next Friday when they host University of Puget Sound for a doubleheader beginning at noon. The Lutes will play another double dip over in Logger territory on Sunday.
