Volleyball Chops Down Loggers 3-0 for Weekend Sweep

TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University volleyball team was in midseason form on Saturday evening, making quick work of Northwest Conference rival University of Puget Sound. The homestanding Lutes emerged from Olson Gymnasium with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-17) victory to remain undefeated through the opening weekend of play.

The visiting Loggers (0-2, 0-2 NWC) held an early 5-4 advantage in the opening set before the Lutes (2-0, 2-0 NWC) tallied five straight points and eight of the next nine to stake a 12-6 lead. PLU would play with the lead the rest of the set with a Lauren Wilson kill giving the Lutes the 25-19 set win.

The second set was deadlocked at 15 before the Lutes rattled off the next five points, including a pair of aces from Emily Zink, and 10 of the final 11 points to secure the 25-16 set win. It was Wilson again cementing the win, collecting back-to-back kills to put away the set. PLU's attack was remarkably efficient in the set, scoring 15 kills on 33 total attacks with a .303 attack percentage.

Puget Sound drew first blood in the third but it was all Lutes after that with PLU netting seven of the next eight points. PLU's lead mushroomed to 14-4 and kept the Loggers at bay the rest of the way. Jaz Alston put the finishing touches on the set with a match winning kill to wrap the set 25-17 in favor of the Black and Gold.

Wilson finished with a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs while also adding three aces. Sianna Iverson tallied eight kills and nine digs while Emily Dulaney has 25 assists and seven digs. Halle Hetzler matched Wilson with 12 digs on the evening.

"Last night we came out strong but there were a few things we wanted to improve on so we just tried to elevate our game and I think the whole team really stepped it up and we swept them in three which is awesome," said Wilson.

"We really focused on the serving and passing game. Last night they got a lot of aces on us and we weren't serving as tough but tonight we made sure to limit their aces and we served a lot tougher and at the end of the day that really wins volleyball matches."

The Lutes continue their homestand next Friday, welcoming Whitman College to Olson Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
