TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University volleyball team extended its win streak to five on Friday night, sending out its seniors in style with a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Conference rival Whitman College inside Olson Gymnasium. The Lutes swept the Blues 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-18) in the opener before seizing the nightcap 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18) to cap off the 2021 spring season.
The Lutes (8-4) made quick work of the Blues (1-9) in the opening match, securing the three-set sweep. Pacific Lutheran never trailed in the opening set, firing off nine straight points to turn a 7-7 tie into a 16-7 advantage. PLU continued to apply the pressure the rest of way, cruising to the 25-11 win.
The Blues tallied six of the opening seven points in the second set but the Lutes battled back, tying the score with a 5-0 run that included a pair of kills from
Sianna Iverson, a kill from
Lauren Wilson, and an ace from
Kristin Moniz. PLU trailed 19-18 later in the set before getting a scoring surge from seniors
Savanna Service and Wilson who each had a pair of kills to stake a 23-19 lead. PLU would lead the rest of the way for the 25-21 win.
The Lutes surrendered the opening three points of the third set but quickly overcame the slow start, taking the lead at 5-4 and never looking back for the 25-18 win to wrap up the match in three sets.
Wilson led the Lutes with 11 kills while Iverson collected eight.
Emily Dulaney had 30 assists while Service finished with five blocks.
Halle Hetzler led the Lutes with 11 digs while Moniz collected three service aces.
In the second match, the Lutes surged to an early 6-2 lead in the opening set and never looked back, taking set one by a 25-17 scoreline with a
Baylee Johnson kill providing the set sealing point.
Whitman owned a 7-2 lead in the second set but six straight PLU points put the Lutes back in front. Pacific Lutheran would hold the lead the rest of the way with a
Hailey Iha kill delivering a 25-19 set win.
Trouble was brewing in the third set with the Blues taking a 16-12 lead forcing a Lute timeout. The Lutes came out of the timeout swinging, collecting 13 of the next 15 points to seal the set, match, and season sweep with Wilson kill capping off the third set for the 25-18 win.
It was the seniors that led the way in the nightcap with Wilson and Service both finishing with nine kills. Service additionally tallied three blocks.
Emily Dulaney has 28 assists and 13 digs with
Halle Hetzler netting a team-high 19 digs.
With the wins, PLU finishes the season a perfect 4-0 against Whitman, picking up 3-2 and 3-1 wins last weekend in Walla Walla.
The Lutes honored its two seniors
Lauren Wilson and
Savanna Service between matches. The duo have helped the Lutes win two NWC titles, make two trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament, and boast a 67-24 overall record. That includes a 46-14 mark against the NWC and a 25-5 record in matches inside Olson Gymnasium.
