NEWBERG, Ore. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team kept its foot on the gas in the Northwest Conference opening match at George Fox University on Saturday. Leading 2-0 in the 81st minute, the Lutes scored three times before the final whistle for an easy 5-0 win.
"George Fox was well organized and disciplined and presented a challenge to break down," said PLU Head Coach
John Yorke. "I was proud of our guys in how they kept working to unlock the problem GF presented. Once we were able to find a second goal, we played a lot freer and found some joy in the attack."
PLU dominated from the opening kickoff.
Robby Guyer scored his first goal of the season in just the sixth minute and the defense held the Bruins without a shot for the entire first half. George Fox registered just one shot over the 90-minute affair and it was not until 52 minutes into the game.
Craig Johnson made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors in the 56
th minute as he deflected a
Keeton Heggerness attempt passed the Bruin keeper.
Things seemed to be wrapped up for the Lutes, but an explosion over the final nine minutes saw the Lutes add three more tallies.
Joe Camp scored his first career goal in the 81
st minute after he was fouled in the box and connected on the penalty kick.
Alex White headed in his second goal of the year in the 85
th minute on a cross from
Trevor Thompson and Thompson scored just 66 seconds later to complete the effort.
"It was a great job by the guys who came in off the bench to really increase the press we were applying and to put the game away," said Yorke. "It was nice to see Trevor and
Joe Camp get their first college points and it was good to see Robby get his first goal of the season."
PLU dominated the shot totals 19-1 and held a commanding advantage in shots on goal (8-0).
Nicholas Gaston picked up the shutout win despite not having to make any saves.
"It's always great to start NWC play with a win," said Yorke. "It felt good to return to official conference play."
The Lutes continue their road trip tomorrow when they take on Pacific at 2:30 p.m.
