Five sets? No sweat for the PLU volleyball team

SALEM, Ore. — For the second consecutive night, the Pacific Lutheran volleyball team weathered a five-set match to claim a Northwest Conference victory.

The Lutes rallied from a set down to force a fifth set and in that set rallied from multiple point deficits twice to grab a 25-23, 23-25, 20-25, 25-21, 16-14 victory. It was the third win a row for the Lutes.

"It's about our team mantra, 'Trust Wins!'," said PLU coach Kevin Aoki. "What a great team effort."

Kailee Efros-Bohn led the offense with a career-high 12 kills, no hitting errors and a blistering .480 hitting percentage. Elle Thomas added 12 kills and eight digs, while Breeze Bartle added seven kills and five digs.

In the decisive fifth set, the Lutes (8-6 overall, 3-3 NWC) trailed 5-1 and 10-6 before scoring four consecutive points to tie the set at 10-10 thanks to kills by Bartle and Thomas and a pair of Willamette hitting errors.

After falling behind 13-11, the Lutes again rallied rattling off three consecutive points to take a 14-13 lead on a kill by Efros-Bohn and two more hitting errors by the Bearcats (5-7, 4-2).

With the match tied at 14-14, Efros-Bohn again came through recording back-to-back kills to seal the victory.

Liv Evaro had 34 assists and 17 digs, while Halle Hetzler led the defense with 37 digs and seven assists.

The Lutes return to Tacoma to face crosstown rival Puget Sound at 7 p.m. Wednesday on the road. They host George Fox at 7 p.m. Friday as part of the annual Homecoming festivities.
