WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The 20th-ranked Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team saw its six-game win streak come to a halt on Saturday, surrendering a late goal in a 2-1 setback to host Whitman College.
Â
"We weren't as sharp as we needed to be in the middle of the NWC title race," said Head Coach
John Yorke.
Â
"It's a tough loss but we have to be mentally strong enough to bounce back tomorrow and try to have our best performance of the year."
Â
The homestanding Blues (9-6-1, 6-3-1 NWC) struck first, scoring in the 10th minute before the Lutes' (13-3, 7-3 NWC) found the equalizer in the 20th minute with
Trevor Thompson scoring off a feed from
Robby Guyer. It was Thompson's NWC-leading ninth goal of the season as the two sides entered the halftime intermission deadlocked at 1-1.

Jacob Burrill provided the difference-maker in the second half, scoring in the 72nd minute to give Whitman the 2-1 win to sweep the season series.
Â
Nicholas Gaston made four saves on the day for the Lutes that were outshot 10-8, including Whitman holding a 6-2 edge in shots on target.
Â
"Glad to see Trevor score today. He loves to score goals and hadn't had one for a couple of games, so it's good for him to get him back in the groove."
Â
The Lutes are back in action tomorrow afternoon, facing Whitworth University at 2:30 p.m. in Spokane.Â
