KERRVILLE, Texas – The Lute offense continued to mash on Saturday, scoring 24 runs in just 14 innings in a doubleheader with Schreiner University. The Pacific Lutheran University softball team split with the Mountaineers 14-6 and 10-13 in Kerrville, Texas.
"We are happy with the growth we saw in Game 1," said PLU Head Coach
Traci Barrett. "
Marley Dyer showed what she can bring to the circle in today's outing. I'm happy for her to get the win in Game 1. Game 2 was a tough battle. Ultimately, hits and walks were troublesome. 18 hits is enough to win a ball game. We are working with our whole pitching staff to get experience and today shows us room for growth."
Game 1
Leading 7-5 entering the seventh inning, the Lutes scored seven times in the top of the final inning to win 14-5.
Arabella Perez got things going in the inning with a leadoff walk and a swipe of second base.
Chaella Galapon followed with a RBI double and
Mari Foster singled her to third. With runners at the corners, Foster stole second and Galapon was able to scamper home for the second run of the inning. The double steal happened with
Erin McGrath at the plate and when she finally swung away it was a deep drive over the outfield fence.
Casey Wright made it back-to-back jacks for the Lutes as they provided plenty of cushion for
Marley Dyer, who got the win in the circle after allowing just one run in four innings pitched.
Dyer allowed just three hits and struck out four in relief of
Emma Ware. Ware allowed four runs in the third inning after tossing a pair of scoreless frames to begin the game.
The Lutes had 12 hits in the game, including three by Galapon, who also knocked in three. Shortstop
Rylie Wada did her damage early in the game with a two-RBI single in the fourth and a two-run double in the fifth. PLU scored multiple runs in three of the last four innings and stole 10 bases in the contest including two by Perez and
Cailey Collado.
Game 2
The Lute attack stayed hot in Game 2 as they produced 15 hits and 10 runs in the seven-inning affair.
Sarah Potwin,
Casey Wright and
Erin McGrath all had three hits in the middle of the order and combined for seven RBI. Wada continued her torrid start to the year with two hits and another RBI.
Inside the circle was a struggle for freshman
Amaya Smith, who was tagged for 13 runs in 4.2 innings pitched. Smith walked eight and yielded 11 hits to take the loss.
Cassidy Conrad continued to be untouchable in relief. After throwing a complete-game shutout yesterday, she tossed another four outs this afternoon and did not allow a run.
PLU (3-1) closes out a six-game road swing tomorrow when they take on Southwestern University for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM Central Time.
