3 Lutes Homer in DH Setback to Pios

PORTLAND, Ore. - Casey WrightChaella Galapon, and Kennedy Kila all hit home runs but it wasn't enough on Sunday as the Pacific Lutheran University softball team was unable to preserve early leads against host Lewis & Clark College, dropping both ends of the doubleheader to the Pioneers. The Lutes fell 4-2 in extra innings in the opener before coming up short 17-9 in the nightcap.

The longball ruled the day in game one with the Lutes (16-10, 8-6 NWC) and Pios (8-8, 5-7 NWC) combining to go deep four times in the extra innings affair.

Host Lewis & Clark opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, plating a run on a sacrifice fly.

Casey Wright provided the first home run of the game in the second, going deep to left field to tie the game before Chaella Galapon went yard in the third, giving PLU the 2-1 lead.

The Pios would extend the game with a two-out home run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings before walking away with the walkoff win with a two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth.

Galapon paced the Lutes at the plate, with two of the team's six hits in the game. Marley Dyer tossed 5 2/3 innings inside the circle, striking out two and allowing just one earned run.

Kennedy Kila belted a home run in the top of the second in game two, staking the Lutes an early 1-0 lead but the Pios hit two home runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, building up a 7-1 lead.

The Lutes would pour on seven runs in the third inning, taking an 8-7 lead. An Erin McGrath single opened the scoring binge, driving in Cailey Collado before an RBI single from Mari Foster. Wright and Casey Wright both drew RBI walks before Shanelle Lum and Galapon both drove in a pair of runs.

PLU's lead proved to be fleeting with L&C scoring seven runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to secure the win and level the weekend series at 2-2. PLU swept the doubleheader on Saturday, prevailing 3-2 and 5-3.

Kila finished two-for-three with two runs scored while Galapon was two-for-four with two RBIs. Inside the circle, Kila and Cassidy Conrad combined for five strikeouts.

The Lutes are back on the diamond next Sunday, hosting Willamette University at 12 p.m.
