Boxers Edge Lutes in Extras to Open NWC Tourney

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - It will be an uphill battle for the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team the rest of the 2022 Northwest Conference Tournament. The fourth-seeded Lutes fell victim to a walkoff squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 10th inning on Friday, coming up short 8-7 against top-seeded Pacific University in the opening game of the double elimination event at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

The Lutes (20-15) drew first blood in the opening game of the tournament, manufacturing a run in the top of the second inning. Jordan Haworth had a leadoff single before advancing to second on a successful sacrifice bunt from Ashton Barton. An Ethan Keintz single to right field allowed Haworth to touch home, giving PLU the 1-0 lead.

The host Boxers (24-13) took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with Drew Thomas belting a two-run home run. The Lutes surged ahead again in the seventh inning with pinch hitter Connor Lemma drawing a bases loaded walk to score Keintz before an Andy Schmitz double plated two more for a 4-2 advantage.

Pacific wasted little time retaking the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five before PLU tied the game in the top of the eighth. An Ashton Barton double brought in Jordan Haworth and Cole Trotignon before Tori Doten drove in Barton, knotting the score at 7-7.

The Boxers loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but the Lutes escaped the jam with a pair of fly outs. Pacific Lutheran wasn't so lucky in extras with a squeeze bunt from Brad Altomare scoring the winning run with one out in the 10th inning.

Keintz and Haworth powered the Lutes, both finishing three-for-five from the dish. Schmitz had a pair of hits in addition to two RBIs as the Lutes cranked out 12 base hits in the extra innings affair.

Tommy Snyder earned the start, throwing the opening six innings and striking out seven. Noah Ferguson punched out three in two innings of work while Alex Gregory was saddled with the decision, tossing the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one.

The Lutes return to the diamond tomorrow morning, facing either Linfield University of George Fox University at 10 a.m. in an elimination game.
