McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Pushing eighth-ranked Linfield University to the brink, the Pacific Lutheran University softball team's Northwest Conference Tournament ended in nine innings, 4-3, to the host Wildcats.
With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Bailey Paul led off the inning with a single and was scarified to second. Paul then stole third and scampered home after an errant throw to deliver the win for Linfield.
Cassidy Conrad (12-3) was the hard-luck loser for the Lutes after tossing 8 1/3 innings in her third start and fourth appearance of the tournament. The senior walked four and scattered nine hits in her 18
th start of the season.
The Lutes (30-14) held leads of 1-0 and 3-1 in the contest. PLU lit the scoreboard in the first when
Erin McGrath walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and
Casey Wright knocked her in with a base hit up the middle.
Linfield tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth, but the Lutes went back in front in the sixth. Wright led off the inning with a home run and
Emma Ware singled.

Kayla Terlecki to second and then Terlecki stole third.
Shanelle Lum came through with a big two-out RBI single to make the score 3-1. The Wildcats wasted little time tying the score in the bottom half as Katrina Johns hit a two-run blast.
PLU looked to go ahead in the top of the seventh, when
Marley Dyer led off the inning with a base hit, but the Lute offense was unable to move her. Tayah Kelley (23-3) retired the final nine hitters she faced to earn the victory. The Lutes left three runners in scoring position over the second and third innings and were unable to break open the game before Kelley settled into her rhythm.
The 30 wins so far this season are the most since PLU won 45 in 2012 and won the NCAA National Championship. The Lutes also advanced to the Championship Game of the NWC Tournament for the first time since 2017. The Lutes will have a long wait to find out if their season will continue in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 9.
