TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University Athletic Department celebrated its student-athletes on Sunday, hosting the 2022 Luteys Awards Show inside Olson Gymnasium. It was the Lutes' first in-person awards show since 2019 with the last two being held virtually due to COVID-19.
 
The Lutes had an amazing year on the field with men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, and women's rowing all capturing Northwest Conference titles. PLU secured 117 All-Conference honors with Lutes winning NWC Athlete of the Week on 53 occasions.
 
George Fisher Scholar-Athlete Award:

Vivian Shinall was the George Fisher Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Shinall is a senior communication major on the women's soccer team and has a 3.99 grade point average.

Keegan Dolan was the men's team George Fisher Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Dolan is a senior philosophy major on the men's soccer team and has a 3.96 GPA.
 
Newcomer of the Year Award:

Hannah Cecil from women's soccer was named the Newcomer of the Year. Cecil was a First Team All-Conference selection and the NWC Freshman of the Year, leading the Lutes in both goals and points. Hannah was third in the conference in scoring with seven goals, helping the Lutes win their fifth consecutive NWC title.

Darius Chaffin from football and track & field was named the men's team Newcomer of the Year. On the gridiron, Chaffin scored touchdowns on the ground, through the air, and on special teams, playing all nine games in the fall. In the spring, Chaffin was the NWC Champion in the javelin and ranks in the top 10 nationally in the event in Division III. Chaffin led the Lutes in kick return yards, averaging almost 24 yards a return and his javelin PR ranks as the fifth best in program history.
 
Laurie Turner Leadership Award:
The Laurie Turner Leadership Award was created in 2021 in honor of former Athletic Director Laurie Turner who served at PLU from 2005 to 2019. This award is presented to student-athletes who have shown leadership in their sport programs, within the athletic department, and in the community.
 
Winners: Cailey Collado (softball), Molly House (softball), Hezekiah Goodwin (cross country & track & field), Ryan Pearson (golf), Danny Samson (cross country & track & field), and Kord Tuttle (football)
 
Frosty Westering Inspiration Award:
The Frosty Westering Lute Inspiration Award is presented on a non-annual basis to PLU individuals who, through their action and involvement, inspires athletes, coaches, and the campus community. The award is named after legendary Lute football coach Frosty Westering who coached at PLU from 1972 to 2003 and won four national titles.
 
Anthony Smallwood from football won the Frosty Westering Lute Inspiration Award. Smallwood experienced tragedy his junior year but made the commitment to return to the football team this fall and be a great teammate. Smallwood's role on the team was invaluable in October when the team, the athletic department, and the campus community experienced tragedy and played a big role in helping others grieve in a positive and healthy manner. 
 
L.U.T.E.S. Impact Award:
The LUTES Impact Award is a new award this year, recognizing a student-athletes that embody the spirit of the PLU Athletics Department, living out the core values of leadership, unity, teamwork, excellence, and service. This individual is a star on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.
 
Connor Lemma from baseball won the L.U.T.E.S. Impact Award. A quadruple major, Lemma is the Lute SAAC President, is the student director for outdoor recreation, a peer tutor, a program assistant for the PLU center for student success, a math grader, and an admissions ambassador. Lemma has volunteered with Special Olympics, Be the Match, and Team Impact.
 
Unsung Lute Award:
Peyton Moreland from football won the first ever Unsung Lute Award. Moreland transferred to PLU in 2019 from Trinity University before transitioning to team manager. A true servant warrior, Moreland embodied the "Lutes open doors" philosophy. Moreland was frequently seen holding the door open to Leraas for the entire football team while always being the last off the bus or out of the locker room, making sure things were cleaned up before leaving. Moreland setup, broke down, and cleaned video equipment daily and is the glue of the PLU football program.

Athlete of the Year Award:
Jessica Ordaz from swimming is the women's team Athlete of the Year. Ordaz was the NWC Swimmer of the Year and the NWC Freshman of the Year this winter, winning seven conference titles and setting five school records. Ordaz helped the Lutes win their seventh straight NWC dual meet title and became just the second Lute women's swimmer to compete at the NCAA Championships.

Seth Hall from basketball is the men's team Athlete of the Year. Hall was an NABC All-American this winter, earning NWC Player of the Year accolades in addition to All-District and All-Region honors. Hall led the NWC in scoring and played in the NABC All-Star Game.

Lute Service Award:
This year's Lute Service Award goes to assistant to the director Luann Corso. A Parkland native, Corso is retiring after working at the university for 22 years in various capacities, starting as a senior assistant in admissions and spending the past 11 years in the athletics department. Corso is the glue that keeps the department running.
 
Career Achievement Award:
Bailey Forsyth from track & field is the women's team Career Achievement Award winner. Forsyth was the national champion in the 100-meters and 200-meters last spring at the NCAA Championships and is a two-time NWC Track Athlete of the Meet. Forsyth won four conference titles over the past two years and this winter earned indoor All-American honors in both the 60-meters and 200-meters.
 
Hezekiah Goodwin from cross country and track & field is the men's team Career Achievement Award winner. Goodwin is a four-year letterwinner in cross country and a five-year letterwinner in track & field. Goodwin was the NWC Champion in the 800-meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase this spring. This fall he was Second Team All-Conference and All-Region. Goodwin helped the Lutes finish second at the NWC cross country championships three times.

The Lutes additionally recognized senior student-athletes, awarding a Lute diploma frame while also recognizing 18 "Super Lutes" who earned their diploma frame last spring but returned for a fifth-year of eligibility by taking advantage of the PLU plus year.
