Guyer's brace, stellar defense leads men's soccer to shutout

NEWBERG, Ore. — Robbie Guyer has been on a tear of late.

The Pacific Lutheran senior scored two goals Friday to help lead the Lutes to a 2-0 victory at George Fox in Northwest Conference action.

He also scored a goal last Saturday and now has three on the season. His first Friday came in the 36th minute, as he slotted home a pass from Trevor Thompson into the lower corner of the net. He added his second on another assist from Thompson in the 70th minute, banging home a shot in the upper half of the goal.

"I'm happy with the response from last week's result," PLU coach John Yorke said. "Winning games is hard, so any time you can get three points we are happy with that.

"Robby has always had the ability to score and we've really been encouraging him to be a little more selfish around the box. It's great to see him putting in the goals."

Senior goalkeeper Nicholas Gaston made one save in goal to earn the shutout, as the Lutes (8-2-0 overall, 3-2-0 NWC) look to get back on track after a shaky start to the conference schedule.

Friday's result could be just what they needed to go on a run, as the Lutes dominated nearly every statistical category.

PLU outshot George Fox 11-2, including 5-1 on goal. They also had 10 corner kicks, while allowing none for the Bruins (1-6-2, 0-3-2).

The Lutes are back in action at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pacific.
